Testimonials

“The voice of Michael Hawes brings Florence Price to life in this gorgeous album. Between his vocal gifts and his brass gifts, one feels the spirit of Price speaking to us from within our souls. With each song Hawes vividly portrays the depth of the writing of Price; you hear her struggles, you the rays of joy and glee, and for me, I was transported back to the time of when Price was on this earth sharing her story without pause to us all. It is absolutely a stunning collection of songs and to hear one song is not enough as each one is its own exquisite pearl. This album is an extraordinarily beautiful hour of concert music by Florence B. Price.”

“In the few short years that recordings of Florence Price’s (1887-1953) music have been available, there have been multiple entries, and it’s about time. Broadcasters of classical music have been asking for more diversity in content for years, and Florence Price’s “discovery” has been wonderful for us. Music that languished in her attic, and the subsequent discovery of these manuscripts by the people who bought her one-time home has led to exposure that this American master should have received all along, rather than being relegated to the past. Recordings on the Naxos label of her concerti, to no less than Yannick Nezet-Seguin and the Philadelphia Orchestra’s Deutsche Grammophon recording of her symphony, join other recordings of this neglected composer’s music. Standing out in the “getting crowded” field of Florence Price recordings is Her Song, a must-have for any devotee of Ms. Price’s music, or any fan of art-song, for that matter. It’s one thing to be able to hear her symphonic works, and quite another to hear her music for voice.

The generous album is sung by Michael Hawes, in a beautiful baritone that might surprise you as belonging to a gifted trumpeter and keyboardist. The earnestness with which he sings is palpable in each track, as is his obvious and serious respect for the composer. The songs themselves are breathtakingly beautiful and deftly performed by Mr. Hawes with his collaborative pianist Eugenia Jeong. As an added bonus, there are beautiful arrangements for brass (including noted trombonist Randall Hawes, Michael’s father!) in the ample lineup. Especially enjoyable is the Octet; it’s a beautiful work, very lyrical, and the playing from the ensemble is (to this radio announcer’s ears) nothing short of top-notch. Bottom line - for Florence Price fans, this album is something you must have in your collection. In fact, it’s an album that should be in any classical music fan’s collection.”

“This new recording is so deeply passionate and beautifully crafted, a must-listen! Price's music shines so powerfully and brightly through these thoughtful and gorgeous interpretations.

Michael Hawes's singing and playing is just wonderful to listen to -- it's a totally unique opportunity to hear such a master class on supportive, inspired breath and strong, clear tone across instruments! I especially love listening for how the text informs his phrasing whether he is singing or playing. Eugenia Jeong has long held a reputation of being The Absolute Best, which remains clear to this listener in her intricate, powerful, playful work in these recordings. The ensemble tracks are also very special, I have enjoyed listening to the brass at full volume to hear the genius of Price's vertical and horizontal motions. I hope everyone will listen to this wonderful music, interpreted by such thoughtful and skilled artists!”

Michael Hawes is a soulful artist who both sings and plays trumpet with his heart on his sleeve. The youthful and warm tone of his baritone allow for a clarity in his interpretations of these works of Florence Price, which will be new to most listeners. Price’s songs blend American folk traditions with European classical styles. In the hands of such a sincere artist, they artfully convey complex emotions and take their rightful place in the canon of American art song.
